A Winter Survival Guide + My Winter Warmer GIVEAWAY!

tea-381235

Fingers cold? Sniffly nose? Yep, winter has hit us here in Australia and it has slowly crept up on us here in Brisbane. My bones have been aching, my circulation and energy has felt stagnant, and boy is it getting difficult to wake up in the mornings. To be honest, the only exercise routine I’ve been practicing has been the quick dash from bed to warm shower. I whole heartedly admit that this chilly season has got the better of me. It was only yesterday when the cracked dry skin on my legs became apparent that I knew it was time to proceed with operation winter overhaul!

You see, winter is a beautiful time for reflection. The slower pace enables us to take a moment to check in and prompts us to take more care of ourselves. That fresh, crisp air allows us to reassess, re-evaluate, and re-connect. What’s working? What’s not? The winter chill has definitely been the wake-up call that I needed to bring some ease into my life, and I figured that might be the case for you too? Instead of dragging ourselves out of bed and wishing for warmer days, how can you truly make the most of this chilly season? Let’s all gather round the fire and brainstorm!

  1. Envision what you want, how do you want to feel?

For me, I want to feel vibrant even if the sun’s not out; I want to feel energised and ready to bounce out of bed, even if it’s still dark outside. Focusing on the feeling instead of all the ‘to-do’s’ is certainly going to make it easier to achieve all of the things that we want to throughout our day. This gorgeous post from my friend Che at The Polka Dot Flamingo really got me thinking about my vision for the next 6 months, and I tell ya, my vision does not involve winter freezing my tush, or killing my good vibes. So I’m going to declare how I want to feel, and then come up with ways in order to feel that way.

What’s going to make me feel vibrant? Getting outside in the fresh air and going for a walk, laughter (better hit up some funny you tube videos), connecting with like minded people.

What’s going to make me feel energised? More time for rests/breaks throughout the day so I don’t fall into a heap, getting my blood circulating through movement and dancing and spending time with people that raise my energy levels not diminish them.

It’s all about the feeling! Envision it, and then you will be super clear on what you need to do to feel that way. Let that feeling guide your every thought, and ask yourself before you commit to something – Is this going to make me feel good? Danielle Laporte has been my biggest teacher surrounding this, and if you haven’t checked her out already, focusing on how we want to feel is the core of her work.

  1. Nourish, nourish, nourish!

I’ve been seeing this word EVERYWHERE lately and I want to just eat it up. I want everything to feel nourished this Winter; my body, my relationships, my home. What kind of image does the word nourish conjure up for you? If I were to nourish myself this winter I would be feeding my body, my soul and my mind with the most nurturing and loving care.

Hydrating that dry cracked skin with beautiful organic skin care

Filling my cup with plenty of hot herbal tea and lemon water to boost my immune system

Enjoying warm, nutritious food that will bring me both energy and vitality.

Whilst we are on the topic of food, I know that this can be a huge barrier to keeping healthy throughout winter. I struggle with this just as much as the next person, but the next time you smell hot buttered bread, or freshly baked cakes, think about whether it is actually going to nourish you? Eat mindfully and in moderation, and just crowd your plate with the good stuff.

Our bodies crave warm foods in winter so why not give it nourishing and nutritious warm foods? Instead of whizzing up that green smoothie, or making a salad (which is more suited to our summer climate), think about other ways of getting your daily dose of fruit and veggies. Try making soups, curries, and hearty roasts to prevent you from reaching for the processed take away. Embrace good fats like avocado, salmon and nuts to ensure your hair, nails, and skin are sparkly and radiant. If you’re feeling confused as to whether you need to detox or cut anything out of your diet – just focus on eating a variety of foods and food groups so you don’t feel restricted.

  1. Re-commit to movement

Exercising everyday has been ingrained into our psyche. I’m going to be really honest with you – I don’t exercise every day, and there are times when the guilt really hangs over my head. We need to stop with the guilt, and come back to why we want to move. Movement get’s our circulation going so that our organs can function effectively, it increases our endorphins and it generally puts a big fat smile on our face afterwards.

Being really gentle with ourselves when it comes to movement is key during winter. Of course it’s cold, of course it’s too dark, but making a simple commitment to listen to our bodies is the motivator for movement. Feeling sluggish? That might be your body’s signal to get up and get that body moving! I’ve been feeling really achy lately so I dragged myself along to a pilates class only to feel a million times better than before. Keep re-commiting to movement in a gentle way, and keep tuning in to what your body is telling you. Only YOU can decide what it needs.

  1. Create ritual

Creating a daily practice that will allow you to rest and restore your energy is a beautiful way to make the most of winter. Light a candle before bed, spend some time journaling in your notebook or doing some gentle stretches can really help you to get out of the winter funk. Perhaps you might like to start your morning’s with a cup of your favourite tea, or spend some time meditating. This doesn’t have to be a long winded process; it could be as simple as dedicating 10 minutes of your day doing something that you really love.

I really do hope that these tips can help you embrace Winter with open arms. No matter what the season, we are all able to lead our most healthy and happy life!

    Love it, Tash!
I feel your pain, i’ve definitely dropped the exercise ball over the last 2 months.
However, Herbal Tea is what has got me through winter. It has saved me from inhaling a tub of Nutella on occasions!

Haha yes! Tea all the way Sal – I don’t really feel like drinking cold water in winter so herbal tea is definately my go to as well! xx

The one thing that gets me through winter is spending time in the garden!!! I know it’s cold and sometimes wet, but it’s amazing how much you can find going on our there if you look, and dig, and smell, and taste!!! I love it…

A warm mug of Nutella + milk in the microwave = best hot chocolate ever!
Also, having my cat (who sleeps with me) as a leg warmer at night in bed doesn’t hurt 😉

Fresh Olive leaf tea with honey (made from my Olive tree in my garden) is the one thing that gets me through winter! Always gives my immune system a boost and stops any start of a cold to get real nasty! Brilliant stuff – thank you mother nature!! 🙂 x

One thing that gets me through Winter is my beloved slow cooker. It has provided me with countless nourishing and warming meals these last few weeks….. Simple to prepare, tasty, and easy on the hip pocket!
(Have to agree with Sally though – tea has also been a saviour this Winter! Copious amounts of tea; green or herbal in an oversized mug and I’m in heaven!) x

Great post Tash! Aside from lovely teas, which I share your love for, I would have to say my Husky Willow is my biggest motivator during winter. Every day she waits at the bottom of the stairs ‘woo-wooing’ (as huskies do) & with an expectant face in the hope of being taken to the dog park. She even helps me get her dressed by sitting and putting her paw in the air ready to put her harness on. 3 degrees or 30 degrees, wind, rain or sunshine she doesn’t care. When I see her doing ‘zoomies’ at the dog park I know it has been worth freezing my butt off for. Plus I am a sucker for a cute face 🙂

That is adorable!! I can just imagine Willow’s eyes lighting up and doing those zoomies haha – what a great motivator, especially in getting moving and getting outdoors. That is great! x

Beautiful Article and beautiful giveaway Tash! I love winter, so for me, making it through isn’t too tough. But some of the things that help with that are cooking up warm, yummy feasts for my friends in a cosy apartment, lit with candles!! Oh and the fact that my fresh flowers last forever when it’s not the middle of Brisbane summer. Much love xxx

Love all of your tips, Tash! I can certainly relate.
Something I love to do when I’m feeling in a bit of a winter blues funk is wake up a little earlier, layer up with warm clothes, stroll down to the beach, plant my feet in the sand, and watch the sun rise…it’s so refreshing + reminds me that despite the colder, darker day, the sun shine does it’s thing and SHINES, so I’m going to do the same and SHINE too!
Large pots of herbal tea and chocolate help too 😉 xxxxx

I’m struggling on the exercise front but am living it up in the nourish sector. My new slow/pressure cooker is getting me through winter. Live chucking it all in in the morning and coming home to a house smelling yum. It’s healthy too! I have found planning our weeks meals on a Sunday so I only have to shop once gives me more time to relax 🙂 love reading this Tash x
