You Can Have That Too.

Over the weekend I got myself in a tizz. Instead of spending time relaxing, reading and switching off – I threw myself a pity party.

From the outside, the pity party looked like a normal relaxing weekend. There was couch time and nourishing meals, sleep in’s and coffee catch up’s with friends – I even bought myself some gorgeous flowers and my favourite magazine! On the inside though, negative Nancy (aka my inner mean girl) was out in full force, dancing her crazy dance.

The negative stories that kept repeating themselves went a little like this…

‘You’re not worthy’

‘You’re a fraud’

‘Everyone else is so much further along than you’

‘You’ll never be able to get to where you want to be’

Urgh it kept going on and on and on. As I kept scrolling through my social media feed, I knew I had to stop. I had to stop comparing myself to others and trust that I was exactly where I was meant to be.

I knew that this down phase was exactly that – a phase, but when we’re in the thick of it, it’s easy to buy into those crazy stories. I tried all the tricks of the trade in my ‘life coach’ tool kit. I meditated. I moved. I watched inspirational videos. I wrote pages in my journal and forgave myself, but somehow I just couldn’t shake that uneasy feeling.

There was a pang in my heart that kept coming up as I looked at what everyone else was doing. I longed for the full coaching calendar that she had and I felt jealous of that girl with her stylish clothes and perfect hair.

Then the penny dropped… as it always does.

I can have that too.

Instead of thinking I’ll never be as good/successful/smart/fit as her, what if I wholeheartedly declared that I can have that too?

If I really wanted, I could have that gorgeous outfit. If I really wanted I could have that weekend getaway and if I really REALLY wanted I could have that career as a full-time life coach.

And guess what? You can have that too.

That loving relationship with the man of your dreams. You can have that too.

The ability to spend your weekends exploring and having fun with your friends. You can have that too.

The healthy body and vibrant energy that gives you that zest for life. Yep – you can have that too.

I think you get my point? Instead of convincing ourselves that we will never get there, or we’ll never be able to live out our dreams, let’s flip comparison on its head. Let’s stop with the pity parties and admit that we’re worthy and yes – we can have that too.

Whenever you feel triggered by someone else’s success, look at it as a signpost to your own desires. Feel the joy in your heart that someone can experience that goodness, and you can absolutely have that goodness too!

So next time you’re having one of those crazy-comparison-negative-nancy days – repeat after me.

If I really, really, really want it. I can have that too.

Tash, I love this article. I first read it a while ago and have been telling people about it ever since. For me, it shows that I actually love what I do and who I hang out with and how I spend my time. I could have what other people have. But I like what I have, I don’t want to give it up! It’s so refreshing, so thank you.

Thanks so much Sarah – that’s awesome to hear and you’re absolutely right. Its about really appreciating what we have and knowing that we can have that too, but ultimately the power’s in our hands. x
